Plenty of articles still walk you through generating clips with Sora inside ChatGPT. That feature is gone. Here’s what ChatGPT actually does for video right now, plan by plan, and the shortest route from its output to a video you can publish.

Can ChatGPT generate videos in 2026?

No. ChatGPT has no video generation on any plan. The current Free ($0), Go ($8/month), Plus ($20/month) and Pro (from $100/month) plans list text chat, image generation, voice chats, deep research and file uploads. Video generation isn’t on the list.

• December 9, 2024: OpenAI released Sora to ChatGPT Plus and Pro users in the US and Canada.

• April 26, 2026: The Sora web and app experiences shut down.
• September 24, 2026: The Sora API is scheduled to close.

OpenAI’s shutdown notice gave no specific reason. OpenAI’s help center confirms the dates and says Sora content can be exported from sora.chatgpt.com/sunset before the data is deleted. No successor has been announced for ChatGPT, so treat any claim that “ChatGPT makes videos now” as out of date.

Can ChatGPT edit videos?

No. None of ChatGPT’s plans list video editing, and OpenAI’s documentation describes analyzing uploaded videos, not cutting them. There’s no timeline. No trim tool, no transitions, no export button.

What ChatGPT can do is plan an edit in text. Paste a transcript with timestamps and ask which sections drag, and you get a usable list of cuts. Ask for a shot list and you get a scene-by-scene breakdown with a visual note for each beat. Both are useful. Both still need a person or a video editor to execute them.

So “can ChatGPT edit my video?” gets the same answer as “can my notes app edit my video?” It can tell you exactly what to cut, and then it hands the job back to you.

Can you upload a video to ChatGPT?

Yes, and this changed recently. OpenAI’s image inputs FAQ now says ChatGPT accepts video files as attachments, including on the Free plan, and may use tools to analyze them. Availability varies by platform and account, so if a video won’t attach from Photos, try attaching it through Files.

OpenAI is upfront about the limits. The analysis can be incomplete or inaccurate, it may not cover the whole video, and it may misread the audio. Every uploaded file is capped at 512MB, Free users get 3 uploads per day, and paid plans can upload up to 80 files every 3 hours.

For creators, that makes upload analysis handy for quick feedback, not a replacement for watching your own footage. Two workarounds give more reliable results:

1. Paste the transcript. Text is ChatGPT’s home turf, and pacing feedback on a full transcript beats a partial read of the video.
2. Screenshot the key frames. Still images are fully supported, so three or four frames get you solid feedback on composition, on-screen text or a thumbnail draft.

Live video is a separate feature. ChatGPT’s voice with video mode lets Go, Plus and Pro users point their phone camera at something and talk about it in real time. It’s useful for asking about what’s in front of you. It doesn’t record, edit or produce a video.

What ChatGPT is good at when you’re making a video

ChatGPT handles the text layer of a video very well, and on most videos that’s where the hours go. Four jobs are worth handing it.

Titles and descriptions. Ask for 15 titles and keep the best three. Paste the final script back in and ask for a description with chapter timestamps.

Still images. Image generation is included on every plan, with limits on Free. A generated image works as a background plate, a diagram or a rough thumbnail.
